7 Things To Do When Your Husband’s Words Trigger You

7 Things To Do When Your Husband’s Words Trigger You

Imagine you’re enjoying a candlelit dinner at a luxurious restaurant with your husband, savoring the evening, when he casually mentions a colleague with the same name as his past affair partner.

Suddenly, a wave of anxiety and hurt floods over you, and you can’t shake the feeling that her name is being brought up again. Although technically, it wasn’t the same person.

Even if his comment was meant innocently, your emotional response is intense because of lingering fears and unresolved issues from the past.

If you’ve experienced a similar situation, you’re not alone. Many women experience triggers because of past infidelity.

So, I compiled seven actionable strategies to help you address these triggers constructively.

What to Do When You Feel Triggered by Your Husband’s Words?

Emotional triggers

The good news is—triggers are a gift. They reveal underlying issues and offer a chance for growth. When you’re triggered, it’s an opportunity to address unresolved emotions. By viewing these moments as chances to understand and connect more deeply with your husband, you can turn potential conflicts into opportunities for strengthening your marriage.

1. Take note of your patterns and triggers

Imagine you’re strolling through the mall with your husband, and he casually remarks, “That dress would look great on you,” while pointing to a woman passing by. This seemingly innocent comment suddenly triggers a wave of anxiety and hurt because it reminds you of his past affair partner. You might find yourself thinking, “Is he still thinking about her? Am I not enough?”

While this is triggering for you, his remark might have been a genuine, offhand comment without any connection to the past affair. Take a moment to reflect on why his comment affects you deeply. It might help to keep a journal where you record instances that trigger strong emotions.

Note down the situation and your reaction. Over time, you’ll identify recurring instances and triggers, such as feeling doubtful, insecure, and hurt. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward understanding your emotional responses.

At first, you might find it challenging and intimidating to write about your triggers, as they may feel like vulnerabilities or weaknesses. However, these triggers are valuable insights that can guide you toward becoming your best self. Keep going!

2. What are the experiences causing these triggers?

Now that you have your data, trace back to the experiences that may be causing these triggers. For instance, if his random comments suddenly make you feel upset, this reaction might be rooted in past experiences with infidelity.

Perhaps you remember his past affair partner wearing the same kind of dress or having the same hair color, creating an emotional response linked to those past insecurities.

Recognize that the comment is bringing up old wounds related to past infidelity. Here are some examples to reflect on:

Emotional Triggers

If you have unresolved feelings from past infidelity, such comments might evoke feelings of insecurity or inadequacy. For example, you might feel that the remark is a reminder of your husband’s past attraction to someone else, leading to a heightened sense of comparison and self-doubt.

Past Associations

Such comments might provoke painful memories of the affair partner, especially if they remind you of the infidelity messages you’ve read. Or you might wonder if he’s subconsciously comparing you to the past affair partner, especially if his comments sound like the same compliments or attention he used to give her.

Self-Esteem Issues

If you struggle with her self-esteem, even an innocent comment can feel like a critique. You might interpret the remark as a subtle suggestion that you need to change or improve, amplifying feelings of inadequacy.

Perceived Neglect

Comments that highlight someone else’s appearance can sometimes be perceived as a lack of focus on your needs and feelings. For example, if you feel neglected or undervalued, such remarks can intensify these feelings, making you feel less appreciated or loved.

Underlying Resentment

If there’s lingering resentment from past issues, any comment that seems to relate to past concerns can trigger those old emotions. For instance, a comment about another woman’s appearance might bring back memories of the affair and feelings of betrayal.

3. Neutralize the emotions linked to these experiences

Now that you know your common triggers and the emotions associated with them, it’s time to neutralize them.

This is how you can avoid old wounds influencing your present marriage dynamics, allowing for clearer, more focused communication. So, this step is a life changer.

Why do you need to neutralize negative beliefs and emotions?

Negative beliefs, such as assuming your partner will always betray your trust, can cloud your judgment and fuel conflicts.

For instance, if you hold the belief that “My partner will eventually cheat again because he did it once,” you will always associate every comment he says and every move he makes with that belief. This leads to tension, stress, pain, and hurt. You don’t deserve that kind of life. So, let’s neutralize these emotions — immediately.

One effective method is cognitive reframing, which involves challenging and changing your thought patterns. If you think, “He doesn’t care about my feelings,” reframing will help you change it to: “He may not realize how his words affect me, and we can fix this together.”

Using my profound Soulify Hypnosis Thought Transformation method, I help women neutralize these emotions that are dragging them down, triggering endless arguments, and causing them more pain.

Soulify Hypnosis Thought Transformation method is like a deep meditation rooted in hypnosis, also called “Meditation on Steroids”.  It is a powerful, natural, safe, and highly effective tool used to quiet the conscious mind and access the deeply rooted beliefs, emotions, and habits in the subconscious.

This method will prune and rewire old beliefs to make a new neural pathway.

For example, if your husband’s past infidelity made you believe that: “I can never fully trust my husband,” the Soulify Hypnosis Thought Transformation method will help you dismantle and replace this belief with a positive thought that you truly want.

4. Is That Really What He Meant?

Let’s say your husband’s statement really triggers you and makes you so angry and hurt. But does your emotional response align with his actual intent?

Often, our reactions are influenced by past experiences and assumptions rather than the present context.

For example, if your husband makes a comment about needing to save more money, you might feel that he’s criticizing your spending habits, even if he’s simply discussing financial planning.

Going back to the same scenario: “That dress would look great on you” comment. You might think he’s referring to his past affair partner but he might be genuinely thinking of you.

To determine if this is truly what he meant, start by asking yourself if there is evidence that supports your interpretation. Next, engage in a clarifying conversation with your husband, using open-ended questions like, “Can you help me understand what you meant by that?” This approach allows you to gain clarity and avoid making assumptions.

You may also practice reflecting on the context of his words and consider if your reaction might be influenced by past experiences rather than the current situation.

5. How’s your intimacy?

The state of your intimacy often reflects the underlying emotional connection between you. If your intimacy has been impacted by past infidelity, you might find yourself more sensitive to comments or situations that touch on trust and connection. You may feel disconnected, leading to heightened sensitivity to your husband’s words.

To address this, first evaluate how connected you feel emotionally. Are you spending quality time together and engaging in meaningful conversations? Are there unresolved issues that might be affecting your closeness?

Next, make an effort to reconnect by setting aside time for each other, such as having regular date nights or engaging in activities that you both enjoy. Open up about your feelings and concerns in a supportive manner, and work on rebuilding trust and understanding.

6. Let him know

It’s okay to tell him how his comments have affected you, as long as you do so without criticism. For example, if your husband makes a remark about your appearance that reminds you of past insecurities, it’s important to express how this comment impacts you. Letting him know that his words hurt can help prevent misunderstandings.

To do this effectively, choose a calm moment to discuss your feelings, using “I” statements to convey your emotions without placing blame. For instance, you might say, “When you commented on my outfit, I felt hurt because it reminded me of past criticisms I’ve struggled with. I would appreciate it if we could be more mindful of such remarks.”

Clearly stating your boundaries can also guide how you’d like to be treated in the future. For example, you could specify that you prefer positive or neutral comments about personal appearance to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

The Power of Energy in Words

power of words

If you don’t want to let him know your feelings because you don’t want to create tension, then knowing the power of energy in words may help you.

Energy in communication refers to the underlying emotions and intentions that accompany our words. When we speak with a positive tone and calm energy, we are more likely to be perceived as sincere and trustworthy. This helps build rapport and promotes a sense of safety and connection in marriage.

Similarly, a harsh tone and negative energy can trigger defensive reactions and hinder effective communication.

For instance, you express frustration to your husband and say, “You never help around the house,” with a tone of exasperation and anger. The negative energy will likely make your husband feel attacked and defensive.

But, if you try to approach the same issue with calm and caring energy, saying, “I feel overwhelmed with the housework today. Can you help me with the dishes, please?” — it invites cooperation and empathy.

You may have already noticed this multiple times in your marriage. If not, try it today.

Timing is also crucial. Addressing sensitive topics when both of you are relaxed and using a gentle, understanding tone can transform your conversation.

7. It’s never too late
