9 Shocking Myths About Hypnosis You Need to Stop Believing

9 Shocking Myths About Hypnosis You Need to Stop Believing

Hypnosis is often misunderstood, thanks to the way it’s portrayed in movies and stage shows. You’ve probably seen people acting like they’re under mind control or cluck like a chicken in a show, making hypnosis seem mysterious or even a bit scary. But the truth is far different. Hypnosis is a safe, therapeutic tool used by thousands of people to heal, grow, and make positive changes in their lives.

In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, “hypnosis has clear benefits in psychotherapy, improving outcomes in areas such as pain management, anxiety, depression, sleep, and more.”

In this blog, we’ll debunk 9 common myths about hypnosis that may be holding you back from experiencing its benefits like healing your emotional pain and rebuilding trust in your marriage.

Whether you’re curious about trying hypnosis for emotional healing, saving your marriage, or breaking ruminating thoughts, it’s time to separate fact from fiction and discover what hypnosis is really about.

Common Myths About Hypnosis

Unlearn these hypnosis myths to transform your marriage:

Myth #1: Hypnosis Is Like What You See in Entertainment or Movies

Many people envision hypnosis as something you’ve seen in movies—where someone clucks like a chicken on command or becomes a puppet for the hypnotist. This portrayal is sensationalized for entertainment and far removed from reality.

Reality: During a hypnosis session, you will remain completely aware of your surroundings and retain full control over your actions and words. You are not asleep and you are fully aware of the noises around you.  The purpose of hypnosis in this context is to guide you into a deeply relaxed state, allowing you to explore and release the pain in your subconscious mind at your own pace.

Hypnosis works by inducing a trance-like state, similar to daydreaming or deep focus. During hypnosis, the decision-making center of your brain remains active, which is why you’re fully in control the entire time.

In fact, hypnosis is highly effective in stress management, overcoming painful memories, and building healthier emotional responses. For example, old emotional pain from high school relationships or childhood experiences can surface in a marriage, often without realizing their true impact. Hypnosis will help you release these emotional responses, enabling you to respond to your husband with more patience, understanding, and love, rather than reacting impulsively based on past hurt. It’s a proven technique for emotional healing—not a magic trick or mind control.

Myth #2: Hypnosis Only Works In-Person

Some women believe that if they want to try hypnosis, they need to visit a hypnotherapist in person to get results.

Reality: Virtual hypnosis sessions are just as effective as in-person sessions. In fact, doing the session from the comfort of your own home—whether you’re curled up on your bed, couch, or under a cozy blanket—makes the experience even more effective.

There’s no need to deal with the stress of driving in busy traffic or being in an unfamiliar office. Plus, you’ll have your own Kleenex box and favorite blanket for emotional moments, making it a deeply personal and relaxed experience.

During the session, we will set a quiet, comfortable environment where you can relax at home. Just as if we were in the same room, I will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. I turn my computer camera off, and close my eyes too. Then together I take you on an incredible guided journey into a profound subconscious healing state remotely.

Hypnosis is a beautiful journey of healing, where you never have to relive your trauma in the way you first experienced it. Instead, you approach those painful memories with a sense of empowerment. For instance, if you’ve been holding onto the anger and betrayal from discovering your husband’s affair, hypnosis doesn’t erase that memory—it helps you release the emotional grip it has on you. That constant cycle of pain, where thoughts of betrayal, anger, and disbelief take over, no matter how much you try to push them away.

You can remember what happened without constantly feeling stuck in the pain. It’s not about forgetting, but rather releasing the emotional weight that’s holding you back.

Myth #3: You Lose Control Under Hypnosis

One common fear my clients have is that they’ll lose control during hypnosis—like they’re going to be put into some kind of “zombie state” where they do or say things against their will. But hypnosis doesn’t work like that.

Reality: You are always in control, fully awake, and aware during hypnosis, and can stop or shift the session whenever you want.

Hypnosis works by inducing a state of deep relaxation, which allows the brain to focus more intently. This means the person in hypnosis is still fully conscious and can make choices, decide what to say or not say, and stop the session at any time.

During our session, you will remain fully aware and can respond to my questions or even open your eyes if you want. I also provide my clients with the recording at the end of each session.

My hypnosis method is a safe and empowering tool that already has helped hundreds of women. You can feel completely at ease knowing that you are always in control throughout the process, and after the sessions, you’ll feel lighter, as if a heavy emotional burden has lifted, leaving you calm and at peace. You will walk away knowing that you will be okay, no matter what challenges you face.

During hypnosis, your intuition becomes clear, and the constant chatter of your busy, controlling, or worrying mind fades away.

For example, I will guide you to a moment in your life when you didn’t feel enough. Maybe a memory or even several may appear. You will feel safe as you revisit it and start to see it through the lens of who you are today. This process allows you to release old patterns of self-doubt, and for the first time, you may fully embrace the belief, “I am enough.”

Myth #4: Hypnosis Forces You to Reveal Secrets

Some people are worried that hypnosis will cause them to spill all their deepest secrets, even things they aren’t ready to talk about. They might fear that they’ll become emotionally overwhelmed, flooded with intense feelings they aren’t prepared to handle.

Reality: Hypnosis doesn’t force you to share anything you don’t want to. Your subconscious only reveals what you’re ready to release.

Hypnosis doesn’t force the mind to reveal anything. Rather, it works by relaxing the conscious mind and tapping into the subconscious, which only allows thoughts and emotions to surface when you are ready to process them.

Our subconscious mind is protective by nature. It won’t release traumatic or deeply personal memories unless the individual feels safe and emotionally prepared to deal with them.

If those emotions and memories arise, it may feel overwhelming in your normal day to day, but during hypnosis sessions, you are safe.

Clients retain full control over what they share during a session. Hypnosis enhances the brain’s ability to process information, but it never overrides a person’s free will or readiness to speak about their experiences.

The mind will only release what the individual is capable of handling at that moment.

Myth #5: Hypnosis Goes Against God’s Will

Some women I work with worry that using hypnosis for healing might go against their spiritual or religious beliefs. They’ve heard that hypnosis could involve something unnatural or even dangerous in the eyes of their faith. Others might fear that hypnosis opens the door to spiritual forces that go against their religious values, associating it with occult practices. Some may also feel that seeking healing outside of prayer or faith-based guidance could be viewed as a lack of trust in God’s plan for their healing, leading to guilt or hesitation about using hypnosis.

Reality: As a Christian, I see hypnosis as a simply natural, relaxed state of focused attention and does not conflict with religious beliefs. It’s a technique to see and release the blocks that are keeping you from trusting and surrendering to the greater plan. It is used to explore the mind’s potential, often used for healing, personal growth, and positive transformation, all of which align with many spiritual paths.

One of my clients had been struggling to overcome resentment toward her husband after years of anger. He was insecure and needing reassurance but my client couldn’t let go of her anger because of his infidelity. She was open to trying hypnosis but was concerned it might go against her religious beliefs.

I explained that hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind, similar to daydreaming or deep prayer, where we can focus inward and reflect on ourselves. As we moved through the sessions, my client realized that hypnosis didn’t challenge her faith—it simply helped her explore her feelings and heal old wounds in a gentle and supportive way.

She felt more connected to her spiritual beliefs, as the process helped her let go of the anger that was consuming her and move forward with compassion and forgiveness for her husband.

My hypnosis method is not about giving up control or going against any belief system. Instead, it is a tool for self-discovery and emotional healing, helping women align their minds with their spiritual or personal goals. There’s no brainwashing involved; instead, hypnosis is a collaborative process—a conversation back and forth.

Myth #6: Only Certain People Can Be Hypnotized

Some women come to me thinking hypnosis won’t work for them because they believe they’re not “the type” of person who can be hypnotized. They might assume that only certain people with a special mindset or talent for deep concentration can experience hypnosis, but that’s not true at all.

Reality: Anyone who can follow instructions and answer simple question can be hypnotized—no special skill or mindset is required. Even individuals with busy minds that never seem to quiet down, as well as anyone who has never meditated in their lives, can reap significant benefits from hypnosis. In fact, it may be precisely those who feel overwhelmed by constant mental chatter who need hypnosis the most.

Entering a hypnotic state often involves accessing the theta brainwave state, which lies between the alpha and delta states. Theta waves are associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and heightened intuition.

To illustrate this, I want to take you through a simple exercise where you will close your eyes, and visualize a blue shape or object. Now, with your eyes closed, see the blue shape or object slowly appear in your mind—not with crystal clarity, but with enough detail to engage your imagination. Slowly, let your mind bring an object forth. This exercise demonstrates that you are able to get into the beautiful state of relaxed hypnosis easily.

If you find it hard to slow down and have a million things running through your mind all the time, hypnosis can still work for you. The theta state opens the door to a rich, transformative experience that is available to all, dispelling the notion that only certain people can be hypnotized.

Hypnosis is simply about allowing the brain to enter a relaxed, focused state. It works by engaging the conscious (busy, logical, thinking planning part of the mind) and subconscious mind through focused attention. Anyone can be hypnotized because it’s a natural state of mind, similar to zoning out while driving or getting lost in a good book.

Whether someone is skeptical, anxious, or feels they’re “too logical,” they can still benefit from the healing process of hypnosis. As long as they can relax and follow basic guidance, they can experience the emotional breakthroughs they need to rebuild their relationships and heal from past pain.

Myth #7: You Need a Vivid Imagination for Hypnosis to Work

You may think that hypnosis only works for those with a wild or vivid imagination, where they can easily visualize detailed scenes. Or you may think, “If I can’t picture everything perfectly, hypnosis won’t work for me.” But in reality, it doesn’t matter whether you can clearly picture things in your mind.

Reality: A vivid imagination isn’t necessary for hypnosis; anyone can benefit from the process, regardless of how they visualize or process information.

Even if you have always struggled with visualizing things clearly, I will help you uncover and process the pain and resentment you haven’t fully dealt with, without needing to “see” anything in your mind.

Hypnosis engages the brain in a way that doesn’t depend on visual imagination. Research shows that people process information differently—some are more visual, while others are more auditory, emotional, or sensory. Hypnosis can work through any of these channels because the key is how the subconscious responds to relaxation and guided focus, not how vividly someone can picture things.

Hypnosis is effective across a wide range of people, regardless of whether they have a strong ability to visualize. It’s more about reaching a relaxed, focused state where the subconscious mind is more open to healing, transformation, and suggestion.

Myth #8: Hypnosis is Mind Control

Another common myth about hypnosis is that it’s some kind of “mind control,” where the hypnotist takes over your thoughts and actions. This myth often comes from how hypnosis is portrayed in movies or stage shows, but in reality, hypnosis is a therapeutic tool where you are always in control.

Reality: Hypnosis is a collaborative process where you remain fully conscious and in control, making decisions with complete awareness.

During the sessions, you can actively make decisions about what emotions to focus on and how far you want to go in exploring them. At the end of the sessions, you will feel empowered by the process, rather than fearful, knowing that you are always in charge.

Hypnosis works by guiding a person into a state of focused relaxation, but it doesn’t take away their free will or decision-making ability. Because the prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain that handles decision-making and control—stays active during hypnosis, you remain fully able to make decisions and stay in control.

This means that anyone undergoing hypnosis is always aware of their surroundings and what’s happening. The process is fully collaborative, with you in the driver’s seat, deciding how deep to go and when to stop. In fact, your kids could interrupt you if needed, and you will be able to open your eyes and talk to them at that same moment.

Myth #9: You Relive Past Traumas

A common fear I hear from clients is that hypnosis will force them to relive painful experiences like their husband’s infidelity. They might worry that exploring their past will bring up intense emotions, making them feel like they’re going through those moments all over again. But that’s not how hypnosis works.

Reality: Hypnosis allows you to review your past without reliving painful experiences – safe emotional exploration and healing.

I understand that you don’t want to go back to the time when you found out that your husband was cheating on you. Many women have the same fear. Don’t worry, hypnosis allows for safe emotional exploration. Instead of reliving trauma, it will help you view past pain from a more detached, peaceful perspective.

During the session, we will focus on revisiting your feelings without triggering the overwhelming emotions you’re afraid of. You can observe those experiences like watching a movie from a safe distance, which will help you process the pain in a way that will not re-traumatize you. Leaving you feeling free, light, calm and at peace.

You’ll feel incredibly amazing afterward with clarity and lightness.

Hypnosis enables the brain to access memories while keeping the person emotionally grounded. During hypnosis, the amygdala (the part of the brain responsible for processing fear and emotions) is less active. This means that while memories can surface, they don’t trigger intense emotional reactions. Additionally, hypnosis can’t erase memories.
